My heart burnt within me with indignation and grief; we could think of nothing else. All night long, we had only snatches of sleep, waking up perpetually to the sense of great shock and grief. Everyone is feeling the same. I never knew so universal a feeling.
This was the reaction of Elizabeth Gaskell, an English writer, on hearing of the shooting of US President Abraham Lincoln in 1865; but it could well describe the feelings of millions on November 22nd, 1963 when another US president fell victim to an assassin’s bullet. The event so etched itself into the collective memory that years after people could remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. There are few other types of historical moments that affect so many people in quite this way.
