Past Progressive Tense
The past continuous tense describes actions that were happening at a specific time in the past. It’s formed using:
was/were + verb ending in -ing
Form:
Subject + was/were + verb (-ing)
Examples:
1. I was studying when you called.
2. She was cooking dinner.
3. They were playing football.
When to use:
– To talk about an ongoing action in the past.
– To describe what was happening at a certain moment.
– To show two actions happening simultaneously in the past.
Negative Form:
Subject + was/were + not + verb(-ing)
Examples:
– I was not watching TV.
– He wasn’t sleeping.
(You can also write wasn’t or weren’t as contractions.)
Question form:
Was/Were + subject + verb(-ing)?
Examples:
– Was she studying?
– Were they playing?
Answer examples:
– Yes, she was.
– No, she was not.
